Hog Hunting - Part 2

Friday…finally! Brooks said we’d meet at 12:00 p.m. in Boerne. It’s 5:30 a.m. now so that means I’ve got, well, too many hours to wait before I can leave. Hopefully, making pancakes and sausage for my girls will help pass the time. I’m ready!

All my gear has been packed since Wednesday night. I’ve been working on an acquired Mathews bow all week and I’m anxious to hunt with it. The only other piece of equipment I’m a stickler about is my knife. I like to have one knife for everything I do in camp. My personal favorite is the Gerber Gator Serrater. The fine edge does all the skinning and butchering while the serrated edge saws through everything from rib cages to pelvic bones. I’m ready!

Great…It’s 5:45 a.m. now…a whopping 15 minutes have passed since I woke up. Coffee cup in hand, it’s time to do a final check over my gear to prepare for this long awaited and much needed hog hunt with my friends Brooks Barkley and Chris Crumley.

My truck has more gear in it than my house; all for a two-day hunt. Oh well, as Captain Woodrow Call once said, “It’s better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.”

I arrive at Brook’s house and am greeted by Rio, a Red Healer, and Harley, a Great Dane. I think I’ll wait outside the gate. I’m ready for this hunt. Brooks greets me and says we are now just waiting on Chris to arrive.

12:01 p.m. – Where the heck is Chris? He’s been off for an entire minute now, why isn’t he here? Note to self…make sure Chris pays for this at some point in camp this weekend. Finally, he arrived! I thought my social security would kick in before he got here.

Now, we’re off; headed to Rocksprings, TX for a weekend of hog hunting and campfires. A weekend away from modern society to relax and act like men is much needed.

Two hours later and we are about to turn off of pavement and head into camp. I make one final phone call to my wife to check in before we really get out in the sticks. Girls are fine, no messages, okay bye! We’re here!

Hopefully next week I’ll have a few pork protein stories to share…Stay tuned.
