Black Buck Hunt
The price of hunting has escalated to a point where the “average hunter” can
no longer afford it. Is it true? In order to answer that question, I believe
we must first determine “average hunter.” While many hunters spend thousands
each season to hunt, others spend hundreds. The most popular game animal
hunted in Texas is the whitetail deer and the cost to hunt for trophy bucks
is high. But there are “exotic” (animals not native to Texas) game animals
to hunt that are equally challenging and great tasting that cost only a
fraction of what a whitetail hunt costs.
Another big benefit of hunting exotics is that they can be hunted year
round. There are many “exotic” animals that have become over-crowded on
ranches. Many exotics are so prolific and have adapted so well to Texas
ranches, they are eating themselves out of house and home. They are causing
serious damage to their habitat.
Hunting is the most economical way to decrease the number of animals to a
controllable population and to protect the habitat. From time to time,
ranchers offer outstanding hunting packages for “exotics” in order to reduce
herd size. Targeting female animals first, will slow down the population
growth.
Some of the most common exotics are axis deer, black buck antelope and
fallow deer. The venison from all these animals is delicious and many
hunters believe is even more palatable than whitetail venison.
As an example of the affordability of hunting exotic animals, we have
organized an upcoming hunt for black buck antelope (females). Hunters will
be able to take up to four animals for $350.00. This two-day hunt in May
even includes lodging. When compared to hunting whitetails, this is a real
bargain. This particular ranch is located west of Junction, Texas and
according to the ranch manager, they need to remove at least 200 black buck.
Like I mentioned earlier, they are very prolific and if the numbers are
reduced this year it will only be worse next year.
