Scent Elimination

Serious hunters know that scent elimination is necessary to close the distance for many big game animals. The closer the prey the more likely you will have a good shot.

Over the last decade there have been lots of products that help reduce human scent. From inexpensive scent killer sprays to expensive clothing that absorbs human odor, hunters will do almost anything to not smell like a hunter.

I have known hunters that wash their clothes in scent free detergent then wrap them in plastic trash bags full of leaves. Then, before their hunt, they suit up only to contaminate their clothes with odors they may not even think of. Automobile exhaust, bacon grease and camp fires are common contaminants.

I am extremely cautious with my scent. So much so that I have carried my clothes to my stand in a plastic bag then changed them once I got settled in, bagging my smelly clothes. I credit many close encounters with animals to my ability to eliminate odor.

Recently I tried a new product that exceeded my expectations eliminating odor. On a Black Bear I used Mini-Grip/ZipPak plastic storage bags to store my gear. Bears have the best nose of any animal I have ever hunted. These new bags are designed to absorb odor from whatever is inside. They worked so well, I had 6 bears (down wind from me) at less than 20 yards. Eliminating all odor may be impossible. But these new bags seemed to do it. They should be available in time for the upcoming archery season. For more information log on to www.packnzip.com .
