From Field to Freezer

“Get the insides outside,” I told my son Kolton and three of his friends. There were 2 mature does two of the boys had taken that needed to be field dressed. Each 12 year old had a sharp knife, but they had no experience with the task that lay just ahead. They could tell that I wasn’t kidding.

To minimize the risk of a trip to the hospital from a serious knife cut, I cleaned the first doe. In less than a minute it was gutted. The boys were amazed. “Now, it is your turn,” I said. A half hour later I had to step in. Each boy had tried his best. But the deer was not finished. I completed the task making sure they watched and learned. I told the boys that they should not be embarrassed at their efforts. There are lots of adults that can’t do any better job than they did.

One of the most frequently asked questions on our Website is regarding proper care of game after the kill. Most people can’t understand why we can’t broadcast a segment on our program that will demonstrate how it is done. Years ago we did product and broadcast such a show and it was well received. It included field dressing as well as quartering up a deer. Viewers loved it.

I recently tried to rebroadcast the same program yet was informed by the network that it may be too graphic for television. Although I don’t agree, I must follow their editorial guidelines. So I have made a decision to offer this video for sale off our Website. Titled “From Field to Freezer” this tape will help viewers learn how to do a better job of processing their deer. Priced at $14.95 this 30 minutes video is the only video of it’s type I know of.

Visit any deer processing facility and you will quickly see that a huge percentage of the deer brought in are not properly cared for. It is no wonder many people hardly like the taste of their wild game.

When you take proper care of your animal, you are assured it will taste its best. There are lots of ways to take your game from field to freezer. But this type will show you one simply way that is easy to understand.

By the way, after the boys cleaned themselves and their knives up, they watched the video over and over again. Next time, it is going to be up to them. I will only watch.
